President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to a teenage lifeguard, who gained national recognition for his daring ocean rescue, to visit the White House for an honor.
A video, captured by Scott Vander Dussen of Santa Cruz Now, and circulated on social media, shows 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams rescuing a young boy from dangerous waters at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California. The child, aged 10, was pulled about 15 yards offshore before Williams could reach him. The rescue, involving the assistance of several beachgoers, took a little over two minutes.
Following the incident, President Donald Trump extended an invitation to Williams to visit the White House. Trump announced on social media, “We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave, he deserves it!”

Ryder Williams was identified by his family in a report to the California Post. His father, Shane Williams, expressed their immense pride in Ryder, calling him an “amazing kid.”
“He just wants to be a kid and work hard this summer to serve and protect his community,” said Shane Williams. He added, “He’s doing great. We’re so overwhelmed. I’m trying to shelter him. I still see him as a little boy.”
