A collision involving a Waymo vehicle occurred on Sunday near downtown Los Angeles, injuring multiple individuals. The incident resulted in the hospitalization of two people and several others being injured, as reported by first responders.
The crash took place at approximately 5:45 a.m. near the intersection of Venice Boulevard and Toberman Street in the Pico-Union area. An exact count of the victims remains unconfirmed by Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) spokespersons. However, the Los Angeles Fire Department disclosed that at least two individuals were transported to local hospitals and at least one person received treatment at the scene and was subsequently released.
Images captured at the crash site depict debris and clothing scattered across the area. Initial reports described the incident as an auto-pedestrian collision, though the cause has yet to be determined. As of noon on Sunday, the LAPD investigation remained active.
A statement from a Waymo representative indicated that the company’s vehicle was not responsible for the collision. According to Waymo, their car was proceeding eastward at 27 mph on Venice Boulevard when a blue sedan, traveling between 47-50 mph, struck a pedestrian outside of a crosswalk. The sedan then veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the self-driving vehicle.
