Additionally, his association with streamer Hasan Piker, known for controversial 9/11 remarks, has drawn attention.
A study by the Media Research Center (MRC) analyzed the presentation of news headlines related to El-Sayed on Apple News and Google News. The study found no negatively framed headlines about the candidate in the top 20 stories reviewed after February 10. MRC President David Bozell expressed concerns about voters being left without a complete picture due to the feeds’ selections.
MRC identified over 104 stories from conservative outlets about El-Sayed that were absent from the reviewed feeds. Both Apple News and Google News featured only one headline about Michigan’s Senate race, none focusing on El-Sayed’s controversies. The researchers examined Google’s daily top 20 news stories since November 1 and Apple News since November 3 using keywords related to El-Sayed.
Bozell linked these findings to a previous investigation of Google News coverage regarding former Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, who was forced out of the race due to scandals. The MRC discovered Google News didn’t feature over 250 stories about controversies involving El-Sayed and Platner, suggesting potential biases in news representation.
El-Sayed has garnered attention for various reasons, such as using a physician title, campaigning with Hasan Piker, accepting an endorsement from Arab American Political Action Committee leader Osama Siblani, and advocating for policies like Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and reducing police funding.
In April, CNN’s Manu Raju asked El-Sayed if he considered the Israeli government as evil as Hamas. El-Sayed responded, stating both were evil for causing large-scale violence.
The primary, occurring on August 4, narrowed down to El-Sayed and Rep. Haley Stevens after Sen. Mallory McMorrow suspended her campaign. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has endorsed Stevens.
Google has disputed MRC’s findings, claiming flawed methodology from a single daily snapshot. Apple stated that its Top Stories are editor-selected and consistent for every user, while personalizations occur in other parts of its feed.
