On Saturday, July 25, 2026, tragedy struck during Berlin’s annual Pride event, Christopher Street Day. The event was abruptly canceled following a violent incident at Tiergarten Park.
A vehicle drove into the crowd, resulting in the death of at least one person and injuring several others. Berlin police have reported that 17 individuals sustained injuries, with some in critical condition.
Authorities are in pursuit of a suspect. The individual, known to police, reportedly has connections to Islamist circles. A manhunt is underway.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner responded to the situation on social media, expressing grave concern. He described the attack as an assault on Berlin’s values of freedom and diversity. Wegner stated, “Berlin is the city of freedom—and our freedom has been horribly attacked today.” He conveyed thoughts to the victims, their families, and friends, while also expressing confidence in the police and security forces to investigate promptly.
Earlier that day, thousands participated in the Christopher Street Day Parade to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Due to the tragic event, this significant celebration, one of Europe’s largest Pride gatherings, was called off.
