Nearly two dozen people sustained injuries as flames erupted in Flushing, Queens, according to officials.
The blaze was reported just before 10 a.m. near College Point Boulevard at 41st Road. The fire rapidly escalated to a five-alarm status, affecting three buildings.
5-alarm Blaze
Authorities stated that the fire originated on the first floor of a two-story, wood-frame home, part of a row of five buildings. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered two of these structures totally engulfed in flames, while the fire extended to a third property, explained Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods.
“These buildings were constructed in 1930 from wood, which makes fire spread swiftly,” Woods stated. “The walls, floors, and roof all being wood presented significant challenges in controlling the blaze.”
Among those caught in the fire, one resident needed rescue from the second floor.
Emergency Response
The fire called for a response exceeding 250 firefighters and EMS staff. Although now under control, the FDNY continues to monitor for remaining hotspots.
The fire incident has resulted in at least 21 injuries. This includes 17 firefighters, two emergency medical technicians, and two residents. All victims were evacuated to local hospitals, suffering non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
Chief Woods detailed that firefighters faced issues like heat exhaustion, smoke inhalation, and minor injuries. Additionally, one resident was in a critical condition whereas another was reported stable.
Impact and Assistance
The fire’s origin is still under investigation. The affected buildings experienced extensive damage leading to displacement of multiple families. The Red Cross has reached the scene to offer assistance to affected individuals.
Nearby residents are advised to keep windows shut to prevent smoke exposure, while drivers should anticipate road closures and traffic disruptions.
