“I’m standing beside my daughter and every female athlete who deserves safety, privacy, fairness, and equal opportunity,” Sean stated.
Briley, a Monroe High School student-athlete, mentions receiving threats following their public stance. She reports aggressive messages claiming she attacks transgender individuals.

Briley expressed feelings of abandonment by political and educational figures. She believes those in power prioritize other issues over protecting female athletes.
“I feel like I’m almost on my own,” says Briley. “It’s not right for a 16-year-old girl to have to fight for change.”
The controversy started when Briley unknowingly competed against a trans athlete from another school. She learned later in 2025 that she had competed against a biological male in the previous season. Sean filed a Title IX complaint, alleging concerns surrounding shared locker room use with the trans athlete.

The revelation left Briley feeling surprised and concerned. She questioned school officials about why she wasn’t informed earlier, receiving no apology or acknowledgement.

In June, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights opened investigations concerning the treatment of female athletes, and the MI High School Athletic Association’s policies on transgender athlete participation remain scrutinized.

“It sucks that they have to be the one person this is focused on, but it only takes one person,” she remarked.
