Democratic lawmakers have expressed the need for accountability in response to a voter registration error in New Jersey, while refuting claims of widespread election fraud. A software issue mistakenly registered about 6,600 noncitizens through the state’s Motor Vehicle System. The company responsible for these security services denies any wrongdoing.
“We absolutely need accountability for what happened,” stated Sen. Andy Kim, D-N.J. He emphasized the importance of addressing the technological problem that led to this incident. The state’s Division of Elections is currently removing ineligible voters from the rolls, and less than 400 had cast ballots.
Representative Mikie Sherrill, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, confirmed that she ordered an immediate investigation once the error was found. She is ensuring the removal of improperly registered voters from the rolls.
The federal agency found approximately 250,000 potential noncitizens registered to vote across various states, including New Jersey. Kim advocates for providing states with the tools to maintain accurate voter rolls, instead of solely relying on federal findings. He argues for improvements in election technology and the necessity of paper trails.
Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, stressed the need for state and county officials to verify voter eligibility. These comments follow House Democrats’ opposition to a legislative package combining a stock trading ban and federal voter ID measures.
Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., dismissed claims of widespread election fraud by former President Donald Trump, describing them as baseless. Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., highlighted the rarity of noncitizen voting and reiterated the need for proof of identity before voting.
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., criticized the error, highlighting Virginia’s voter ID requirements and election audits as effective in preventing noncitizen voting. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., called for continuous review of election software to prevent such mistakes.
Rep. Seth Magaziner, D-R.I., expressed support for a simple voter ID law but opposed recent legislative proposals for including measures beyond ID requirements. He criticized additions like restrictions on mail ballots.
