Commerce Department Restricts AI Model Access by Anthropic

The U.S. Commerce Department has directed Anthropic, an AI company, to restrict access to its top two advanced language models from foreign nationals. This order came into effect on June 12, 2026. As a result, Anthropic promptly disabled its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. These models are now inaccessible to all users.

Researchers and scientists often contribute to The Conversation, a nonprofit news organization. They aid readers in understanding complex matters by providing facts and analysis.

The government’s decision might signal an intention to reserve these AI capabilities for its use, potentially due to their advanced nature or strategic importance. This move raises questions about the balance between national security and global technological advancement.
