A substantial homeless encampment, spanning approximately 12 blocks along Manhattan’s West Side, is causing alarm among nearby residents, workers, and visitors. Several individuals expressed their concerns to Fox News Digital, stating that the city is inadequately addressing issues like tents, litter, and alleged illegal activities.
“I think it’s embarrassing,” said Joan G., a local resident who preferred anonymity while speaking near the encampment. A construction-site security guard, identifying himself only as “Joe the Dog Man,” also criticized the city’s lack of action. “I just don’t think enough is being done,” he remarked.

Mayor Mamdani initially halted encampment clearances after his election, keeping a campaign promise. He later revised the policy, allowing a seven-day period for outreach before dismantling any encampment. “They gotta clean them up and keep on top of them,” Joe stated. “This seven-day stuff, or whatever it is now, is really not working.” City outreach workers recently visited the area, primarily collecting trash, although many tents remained.
Joe suggested the police should have broader authority to enforce city regulations. “I think we need to enforce and give the police the right to do their job,” he said.

The encampments near the Intrepid Museum drew complaints about obstructed sidewalks, garbage, and illegal activities. “It’s terrible,” Joe expressed. “Drugs, prostitution, and everything else in between.” Reports indicated that some individuals at the encampment were using power from utility poles, which led to a response from the NYPD.
“The NYPD has not been given the green light to clean this encampment up, but we are ready to do so,” a spokesperson informed Fox News Digital. The New York Post claimed sex workers frequented the area, but Fox News Digital has not independently confirmed these claims.

The encampment, running from 34th Street to 46th Street on 11th Avenue, raised worries about its impact on tourism due to its location near the Intrepid Museum and Javits Center. Karen, a visitor from Belgium, commented on the inadequate support for homeless individuals. “It’s sad that they’re not getting the support they promised them,” Karen stated.
Mayor Mamdani emphasized housing assistance and altering how homeless New Yorkers are treated in his campaign. While he pledged to expand the housing voucher program, he later contested a court order mandating its expansion to ensure financial sustainability.

“Shame on us. We have so much wealth in this city,” Joan remarked regarding the city’s insufficient housing for the homeless. “I’m okay with paying more,” she added. “Taxpayer dollars help people who don’t have a place to stay — give them shelter, give them food, help them get trained, get a job, whatever.” Mayor Mamdani announced that the encampments would be cleared, though he did not specify a timeframe. His office did not respond to a request for comment.
Joan urged for improvements, “Make this a better place for everyone, make it a better place for tourists,” she said. “This is not a great look for us,” she concluded. “Great city. We can do better.”
