Ashley Brouillette identified her ex-husband, David Brouillette, as the officer who shot Joan Durán Guerrero during a traffic stop attempt in Biddeford, Maine. She discovered his involvement when he called, requesting her to support his character. Ashley refused to lie for him or hide the abuse from their past marriage.
David Brouillette hasn’t responded to NPR’s requests for comments. An ICE spokesperson declined to confirm or deny Brouillette’s involvement in the incident but noted his decade-long federal law enforcement career includes necessary training.
Scott Collins, a former close friend of David Brouillette from high school, also reported on his violent nature. He mentioned that David often sought conflicts over online comments. Collins accused him of using racial slurs during their high school years.
“He had a bad tendency of going out and looking for fights,” Collins stated. “If he saw something online he didn’t like, he would pursue a confrontation.”
Ashley Brouillette expressed concerns that racism influenced Durán Guerrero’s death, referencing David’s high school nickname “White Boy David.” She described their turbulent marriage filled with violent episodes, citing one instance where he allegedly threatened her life with a gun.
Ashley acknowledged she often retracted her statements due to feeling pressured and intimidated, hence no police records support her claims. Despite retracting them, she retained a voicemail from 2022 where David made threatening remarks about her and her family.
During their divorce, Ashley contacted Brouillette’s platoon leader in the Maine Army National Guard. She offered evidence of his bipolar disorder and borderline schizophrenia diagnosis. However, her concerns were dismissed.
Ashley was skeptical when David mentioned his ICE employment last year, unsure about any existing background checks. Previous incidents, including a 2022 event where he allegedly harmed their daughter, were significant red flags unheeded by authorities.
A court filing in 2021 temporarily revoked David’s firearm rights. His second ex-wife, Lucinda Brouillette, accused him of increasing aggression towards their daughter, describing a troubling incident that involved dragging her out of bed.
Ashley Brouillette is deeply affected by recent events, emphasizing the loss of life and the need for her warnings to be acknowledged. She hopes her renewed efforts can prevent future occurrences.
