A coalition supported by Google co-founder Sergey Brin and affluent tech investors is actively opposing a proposed one-time tax targeting California’s wealthiest individuals.
This coalition has booked nearly $87 million in advertising space throughout the state to broadcast TV ads. These ads mark the beginning of what could be a costly battle affecting both Silicon Valley and state politics.
Billionaire Tax Proposal
The tax, slated for discussion in the upcoming November ballot as Proposition 40, would impose a one-time levy on California residents with a net worth of $1 billion or more. This proposed tax has already prompted some of the state’s richest residents to either leave California or invest significantly in local political campaigns.
Coalition Strategy
Rather than opposing the tax proposal directly, the billionaire-backed group, known as Building A Better California, has introduced two alternative tax-related measures on the ballot. These measures include clauses that might nullify the proposed billionaire tax should either measure pass.
The group’s advertising filings do not explicitly state which ballot measures the commercials will support.
“Our coalition is committed to ensuring that all California voters are informed about policies that impact our state’s future and economy,” stated Abby Lunardini, a spokeswoman for the coalition. “The measures we support offer vital and sensible protections aimed at enhancing state accountability and governance, safeguarding California families from new taxes on their retirement and savings.”
These efforts highlight the significant political and financial ripple effects the proposed tax could have in California.
