Mitchell & Michaels Plat Du Jour, a downtown Homewood restaurant, opened in January 2026 and is revamping its menu. This change responds to customer feedback from the first six months of operation. The menu will now include more options and introduce weekend brunch hours.
Owner Chris Michaels, who runs the restaurant with his wife Stacey, states, “We’ve worked out some things. We’re ready to let this thing take off.” Initially focused on Southern soul food, the restaurant plans to add traditional American dishes to encourage regular visits.
“We learned over the first six months what the community wants,” Michaels said. “Customers mentioned adding items like burgers, so we incorporated burgers, pastas, and paninis.” The menu boasts an increase of about 25 new items, aiming to cater to both everyday dining and special occasions.
The restaurant operates Wednesday to Sunday, closing on Mondays and Tuesdays. Soon, it will feature a regular menu during the week with a special soul food menu on weekends. “Weekends are crucial, like most restaurants,” Michaels explained.
A grand re-opening is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Sunday. “We wanted to make these changes on schedule,” Michaels added. The establishment is on Dixie Highway, near the Homewood Public Library.
Starting the weekend of the 25th, the restaurant will offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., switching to soul food afterward. “Brunch is important. Guests requested it since we opened,” Michaels shared.
The venue provides weekly live entertainment and is available for catered events. Michaels has a background in broadcasting, which drew him to the restaurant’s entertainment aspect.
Homewood has been great. They’ve been super supportive of everything that we’ve done thus far.
Chris Michaels has long-standing ties to the south suburbs, having attended Thornwood High School in South Holland. “I’ve been part of the Southland area for at least 30, almost 40 years now,” he noted.
The property was sought after for about two years due to its proximity to Homewood’s vibrant downtown and potential for foot traffic. “We’re completely satisfied with our decision to open in Homewood,” Michaels stated.
The restaurant initially considered a smaller location, but business success exceeded expectations. “It became more than we anticipated, but we’re very happy with that,” Michaels remarked. “We were dreaming a little too small.”
