Chalk Art Initiative at City of Hope Cancer Center
Asia Bell from Elgin was one of eight artists involved in the City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago’s live chalk art initiative, “Artistic Expressions of Hope,” held from July 8-11. The event gathered artists affected by cancer to create pieces celebrating survivors and loved ones at various locations.
Bell reflected on her 81-year-old great-grandmother, who passed away from stomach cancer in 2016. She created her chalk art on July 9 at the Zion location using a personal photo that inspires hope.
Participation Call for Fox River Trolley Museum Event
The Fox River Trolley Museum is inviting participants and vehicles for their Military & American History Weekend from August 1-2, at South Elgin. They are seeking reenactors from any American historical era and vehicles from the 1920s to the 1980s, including vintage emergency vehicles and 1970s-era Chicago police cars.

Elgin Community College Workforce Grant
Elgin Community College received a $262,000 grant under Illinois’ Restore, Reinvest, Renew program for workforce readiness and career training. State Sen. Cristina Castro emphasized the program’s contribution to equity across communities in Illinois.
Since 2021, over $290 million has been awarded to various organizations state-wide, aiming for resource investment to foster career growth for all residents.
Hanover Township Backpack Program
Hanover Township is requesting donations for their back-to-school distribution from August 12-14 at the Astor Avenue Community Center in Hanover Park. Needed items include backpacks, notebooks, pencils, markers, and gift cards for supplies.
Last year, 1,800 backpacks were distributed. Donations can be dropped off at designated locations in Bartlett and Elgin. Registration and proof of residency are required.
Carpentersville Habitat Project Delayed
Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley’s development in Carpentersville, Carter Crossing, is delayed until spring 2027 due to increased costs. The nonprofit plans to start infrastructure work next year, replacing water and sewer systems to support new and existing homes.
The project involves building 28 affordable homes over four years, with significant collaboration from the village authorities.
