Billionaire Warren Buffett has decided to redirect his charity donations this year. Notably absent from the list of beneficiaries is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, following revelations about Bill Gates’ ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Rather than donating to the Gates Foundation, Buffett announced he will give approximately $6 billion to four foundations linked to his family.
Upcoming Philanthropic Plans
Buffett plans to donate his remaining Berkshire Hathaway stock, over $140 billion, by the end of 2034. Previously, he intended for his children to allocate his assets within a decade of his passing at age 95. He stated: “Mortality is unpredictable, but my remaining shares will be donated to the four foundations one way or the other by December 31, 2034.” His goal is for these grants to grow annually, benefiting the three foundations managed by his children, alongside investments in the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation.
Details on Donations
This year’s donation amounts are akin to last year’s $6 billion contributions. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation will receive around $4.5 billion, while $500 million will be allotted to each of the Sherwood Foundation, Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and Novo Foundation, led by his children. Historically, since announcing his giving pledge in 2006, over $61 billion have gone to the Gates Foundation from Buffett. The family foundations are receiving significantly more funding this year, likely offsetting what was previously directed to the Gates Foundation.
The Gates Foundation’s Response
The Gates Foundation expressed gratitude in a statement: “The Gates Foundation is grateful to Warren Buffett for his decades of support for our work. His gifts, totaling more than $47 billion, have helped us expand and deliver on the foundation’s mission to improve health and opportunity for people around the world.”
Despite Buffett’s shift, the Gates Foundation acknowledges the sustaining force of Gates’ pledge to donate 99% of his wealth to the charity, which intends to conclude operations in 2045.
Ties to Epstein and Impact on Relations
Bill Gates has denied involvement in Epstein’s crimes, citing investment talks as his reason for meeting Epstein. Jeffrey Epstein, facing charges of abusing numerous underage girls, committed suicide in jail in August 2019. Although Gates claims no wrongdoing, records indicate multiple incidents of correspondence and meetings with Epstein.
Buffett acknowledged that he has not communicated with Gates since the detailed accounts of this association emerged. A previous close friend of Gates, Buffett has defended him on occasion; however, recent revelations have stilled their interactions.
Buffett’s Perspective on the Epstein Scandal
Buffett shared his disbelief at Epstein’s ability to deceive many influential figures. He stated that he wants to avoid any association that could be scrutinized later. Gates Foundation is currently reassessing its connections and processes relating to Epstein, which involves evaluating past interactions and future partnership policies.
