President Donald Trump and Governor Henry McMaster are focusing on making a swift appointment. Potential candidates for Graham’s seat include Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and Representative Russell Fry. The GOP warns against internal conflicts.
Trump has hinted at a preference for Fry as a potential long-term replacement. Fry is already actively seeking Trump’s endorsement for the special election scheduled for August 11. Other lawmakers are also eyeing the race, eager to secure Trump’s support.
Trump expressed his admiration for Fry, calling him talented. Fry gained Trump’s endorsement during his initial congressional run in 2022, defeating former Representative Tom Rice. Rice was among the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump following the January 6 riots.
Senator Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham, received an interim appointment from Governor McMaster to fill her brother’s Senate seat for the duration of his term. Trump endorsed her appointment, but expects it to be temporary.
Other potential candidates for Graham’s seat include Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman. Norman has actively sought Trump’s endorsement. Neither Mace nor Norman succeeded in securing the GOP nomination for South Carolina governor.
