Following the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., GOP senators have united behind the appointment of his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to fill his Senate position for South Carolina temporarily. Senator Roger Marshall expressed confidence in Nordone’s ability, highlighting her shared values with Graham. He believes Nordone will perform strongly with an American-first conservative stance.
Darline Graham Nordone was quickly appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, just two days after her brother’s passing due to aortic dissection. McMaster’s decision aligns with state law, allowing such appointments to fill Senate vacancies until the term ends on January 3. President Donald Trump, an ally of McMaster, also publicly endorsed Nordone for the role.
Senator John Hoeven remarked on the close relationship between Nordone and Graham, noting how Graham became her legal guardian and adopted her after their parents passed away. Hoeven emphasized the supportive and familial bond between them.
Nordone’s appointment restores the Republican Senate majority to 53 seats. Graham was known for his character and for cultivating friendships throughout the Senate. His ability to connect with colleagues was frequently mentioned by GOP senators.
A special primary election is scheduled after a one-week filing period beginning July 21, with the primary itself on August 11. If required, a runoff would occur two weeks after the primary, followed by the general election on November 3. Nordone has not indicated if she will run for a full-term position. Meanwhile, Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman are preparing for potential candidacies.
