St. Louis Cardinals rising star Jordan Walker thrilled fans by defeating Kyle Schwarber in a dramatic culmination at the 2026 Home Run Derby on Monday night. Walker’s decisive swing resulted in his 12th home run, surpassing Schwarber’s 11, in a newly introduced MLB format.
During the final round, Walker’s last hit landed in the left field stands, marking his victory and earning him the title of the league’s top slugger at All-Star weekend. His parents, present to witness his achievement, celebrated his success alongside him.
This year’s Home Run Derby featured a fresh format with all eight contestants allowed 20 swings each. Competitors could continue swinging if their last hit resulted in a home run, allowing them to keep their momentum without battling against the clock or a need for a bonus round through precise distance hitting.
“Players had the opportunity to focus on technique without the pressure of a timer,” noted a spokesperson for MLB.
Dramatically, Boston Red Sox’s Willson Contreras emerged as a standout performer early on, hitting 13 homers within his 20 swings. However, Walker matched this performance, setting high stakes for entry into the semifinals.
The excitement continued with Kansas City Royals’ Jac Caglianone narrowly missing a higher round with eight homers, while Chicago White Sox’s Munetaka Murakami managed nine. The field further tightened as Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays struck 12, prevailing over New York Yankees’ Ben Rice, who concluded with seven.
Home crowd favorites Schwarber and Bryce Harper realized their chances to progress depended on achieving double-digit totals. Schwarber advanced by hitting 10 home runs, but Harper fell short with eight, positioning Schwarber as the last semifinalist.
In the semifinals, 15 swings became the benchmark. Schwarber, harnessing the energy of the Philadelphia crowd, excelled by driving nine home runs, overshadowing Contreras’s eight.
Walker also continued his prowess, narrowly overcoming Caminero with a 6-5 tally, securing his position for the Derby trophy clash.
During the final showdown, Schwarber achieved 11 homers, exerting immense pressure on Walker, who was yet to swing. Displaying determination, Walker commenced with four home runs, before rallying to reduce the gap with Schwarber.
Needing to capitalize on his final opportunity, Walker equaled Schwarber at 10 home runs, intensifying anticipation among the spectators. His adept patience paid off with a subsequent soaring hit to left field, sealing his victory.
Currently tied 10th in the MLB for home runs this season, Walker boasts an impressive 22 home runs, batting an average of .294, with 74 RBIs for the Cardinals.
