Belgium’s Soccer Federation Appeals FIFA’s Decision on Balogun’s Red Card Ban

Belgium’s soccer federation has taken steps to appeal FIFA’s recent decision regarding USA World Cup star Folarin Balogun. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) seeks clarification over FIFA’s suspension of Balogun’s red card ban, reported by The Athletic.

Folarin Balogun scored the opening goal for the U.S. during the World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, his subsequent red card, issued after a VAR review for stepping on defender Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle, did not result in suspension — a rare occurrence since 1962.

Rudi Garcia, Belgium’s coach, expressed his disbelief at the ruling, hinting at perceived inconsistencies. He emphasized the RBFA’s commitment to uphold football’s ethics and integrity.

“The Belgian federation defends football in general and its ethics,” Garcia stated through a translator.

Despite FIFA’s decision to lift the suspension, the RBFA is considering options, prioritizing fair play and the protection of legitimate team rights in the current World Cup and future tournaments.

FIFA outlined a probationary period of one year for Balogun. Any similar infractions during this period could lead to reinstating the suspension and additional penalties.

Recent reports suggest that President Donald Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino, querying the red card decision.

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed FIFA’s decision, reflecting on the fairness of being forced to play a man down.
