The Passion of the Christ Returns to Theaters Ahead of Sequel Release

Mel Gibson’s iconic film, “The Passion of the Christ,” will be back in theaters across the nation for a limited time this September. This re-release precedes the much-anticipated sequel set for 2027. The announcement from Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment confirms the 2004 film’s return from September 10 through September 17. The movie has been enhanced with 4K resolution and Dolby Atmos sound.

Audiences viewing “The Passion of the Christ” will also get an exclusive preview of the sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” expected to premiere on May 6, 2027. Additionally, “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two” is planned for release on May 25, 2028, during the Memorial Day weekend.

Lionsgate’s president of worldwide distribution, Kevin Grayson, remarked on the film’s significant impact, stating that it offered a profound cultural and faith experience. He noted the new restoration will let fans and new viewers experience the film in a fresh way.

When initially released, “The Passion of the Christ” earned more than $610 million globally on a $30 million budget, securing Academy Award nominations for makeup, score, and cinematography. The film, however, stirred controversy due to its intense depiction of violence and subject matter. For 20 years, it held the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film domestically until the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” in 2024.

Fathom Entertainment CEO Ray Nutt praised the film for its unique impact on culture, highlighting its success with both faith-based and secular audiences. He noted that the film paved the way for future religious-themed projects.

Jim Caviezel’s portrayal of Jesus Christ in the original film was widely acclaimed. However, due to challenges with de-aging and scheduling, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen will play Jesus in the upcoming sequels, while Mariela Garriga will take on the role of Mary Magdalene.

Director Mel Gibson has emphasized that the sequels will explore spiritual themes and mankind’s inner struggles. He described these projects as central to his professional journey, viewing the films as a mission lasting over 20 years. Gibson sees this endeavor as telling one of the most significant stories in history.
