New Hampshire Celebrates 250th Anniversary of Independence with Historical Tributes

NASHUA, N.H. – As the United States commemorates 250 years of independence, the focus traditionally highlights Massachusetts colonists’ role in sparking the American Revolution. However, New Hampshire’s Governor Kelly Ayotte emphasizes the Pine Tree Riot’s significance in her state as an event possibly influencing the Boston Tea Party.

“Before the Boston Tea Party, we had the Pine Tree Riots here in New Hampshire. That’s because the British tried to come in and tax our pine trees and take them for their own, and we said no way,” Ayotte explained.

The New Hampshire exhibit on the National Mall during the Great American State Fair includes a mention of the 1772 Pine Tree Riot. The British policy barred colonists from cutting White pine trees over 12 inches in diameter, reserving them for the Royal Navy’s masts. The riot showcased the colonists’ ability to oppose British policies.

“We were early joiners of the revolution, proud of this nation,” Ayotte emphasized. New Hampshire played a pivotal role in history, being “the ninth state to ratify the Constitution” and drafting its own Constitution first among states.

The state’s exhibition at the fair highlights these contributions, with a video featuring prominent figures reading the Declaration of Independence and sharing New Hampshire’s history.

“New Hampshire is so proud to be part of the fair on the National Mall,” said Ayotte. “We have a display of our history and we’re giving out some great New Hampshire maple syrup.”

Back in New Hampshire, Ayotte mentioned special historical documents, including a Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence, will be available for viewing at the Statehouse visitors center.

Cities and towns across New Hampshire are known for their vibrant Fourth of July celebrations, including parades, fairs, and fireworks. This year is no exception. Ayotte, a former U.S. senator and state attorney general, plans to march in four Independence Day parades.

“It’s going to be fantastic,” she expressed. Paul Steinhauser covers national campaigns for Fox News.
