USMNT’s Balogun Faces One-Match Suspension After Red Card Incident

USMNT’s Balogun Faces One-Match Suspension After Red Card Incident

The United States Men’s National Team experienced tension between their 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and their upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium. Striker Folarin Balogun received a red card in the 64th minute after a VAR review by referee Rafael Claus. Balogun was penalized for stepping on the ankle of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemović.

The USMNT could not appeal the red card, meaning Balogun is ineligible for the match against Belgium. FIFA was in a position to extend Balogun’s suspension for further matches if they considered his actions as severe. However, according to Fox Sports reporter Doug McIntyre, FIFA decided Balogun will only miss the upcoming game. If the USMNT advances to the quarterfinals, he could return to play against the winner of the Spain and Portugal match.

“Per USMNT spokesperson, FIFA has confirmed that Folarin Balogun is suspended for one game,” McIntyre shared on X.

This decision benefits the USMNT, who may need Balogun for future matches. He’s been an important player, scoring three goals for the U.S. in the tournament. Some controversy surrounded the red card decision as Claus initially refrained from issuing even a yellow card before deciding on the red. This decision left the USMNT with 10 players for the remainder of the match.

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino defended Balogun post-match, describing the incident as a “normal action” in soccer. Facing Belgium without Balogun means the USMNT will be without their leading scorer. Belgium last triumphed over the U.S. in a friendly match with a 5-2 scoreline at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 28.
