Russia Strengthens Crimea Bridge Defenses Amid Ukraine’s Pressure Campaign

Recent satellite images have revealed strengthened Russian defenses around the Crimean Bridge. This structure links the annexed peninsula of Crimea, south of mainland Ukraine, with Russian territory. Amidst this, Ukraine is ramping up its pressure campaign on Crimea.

Floating buoys now surround the bridge. These images, accessible on Google Earth and sourced from the European Union’s Copernicus satellites, span the period from October 7, 2025, to June 16, 2026. The purpose of these fortifications is to thwart Ukrainian drones loaded with explosives traversing through water. Sidharth Kaushal, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), explains, “These defenses aim to intercept attacking surface vessels more effectively.”

In recent weeks, Ukraine intensified its attacks on Crimea. Ukraine aims to cut off the peninsula from Moscow by targeting logistics sites with medium-range drones. Fuel facilities supporting the Kremlin’s war and its economy are primary targets. Ukraine continues to strike Russian oil facilities across multiple regions, including near the Kremlin in Moscow.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The region now hosts significant Russian military bases and remains popular among Russian tourists, despite the ongoing Ukrainian attacks. Kyiv vows to reclaim Crimea and other regions recognized internationally as part of Ukraine. Conversely, Russia refuses to relinquish control over these territories, leading to a deadlock in peace talks.

The Crimean Bridge, known as the Kerch Bridge, connects Russia’s Krasnodar region to the peninsula. Russian President Vladimir Putin inaugurated its construction in 2018. The bridge symbolizes a point of contention for Ukraine, making it an appealing target for strikes from Kyiv.

The bridge experienced several closures and reopenings. Notably, a truck loaded with explosives exploded on it in October 2022, causing a fire and structural damage. At least three casualties were reported by Russian officials. In response to such attacks, Ukraine used explosive-laden drones. Russia then deployed added defenses around the bridge.

For years, Russia has implemented netting and buoys for bridge protection. Russian-backed authorities in Crimea announced the cessation of civilian fuel sales at gas stations, prioritizing government agency needs. As a precaution, outdoor events face bans, streetlights are off, and public transport schedules have reduced, signaling the effectiveness of Ukraine’s drone campaign.

Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, stated Kyiv’s goal to make Crimea “an island.” Subsequently, Ukraine reported strikes on several targets near the Crimean Bridge, including two oil sites and four radars integral to Russia’s air defense systems. Ukraine claimed the weekend attacks damaged a part of the Kavkaz oil port in Krasnodar and impacted two car ferries supplying Russian troops in occupied Ukrainian territory.
