For the past 25 years, Mona Khalil dedicated her life to safeguarding endangered sea turtles along a beach near her guesthouse in Tyre, Lebanon. She played a crucial role in ensuring these turtles could lay their eggs safely each summer by protecting the hatchlings from predators, allowing them to reach the Mediterranean Sea.
Ms. Khalil’s unwavering commitment to these vulnerable creatures gained her notable recognition among conservationists. She managed to unite various stakeholders who frequently had differing interests. Her efforts continued undeterred even during the tumultuous conflicts in southern Lebanon.
However, on June 4, Mona Khalil’s life took a tragic turn. Amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah—a conflict that has resulted in over 4,000 civilian casualties—she suffered injuries from an Israeli airstrike. Sadly, on Friday, she succumbed to these injuries at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, according to her close friend Fadia Jomaa.
Her sister, Amal Khalil, reflected on Mona’s life, describing her at 76 as a ‘well-rounded person—extremely tough, extremely kind.’ The conflict has caused profound pain within the family, with Amal expressing feelings of anger over the loss.
The ongoing hostilities between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran and controlling much of southern Lebanon, have jeopardized a fragile peace agreement involving the United States and Iran. This tragic environment framed the latter part of Mona Khalil’s life.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, to Lebanese parents, Mona Khalil later relocated to the Netherlands. She spent over ten years there, engaging in a career as a porcelain restorer, before ultimately dedicating her life to the protection of sea turtles in Lebanon.
