Shohei Ohtani Temporarily Away from Dodgers for Child’s Birth

Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani was absent from the team on Friday due to the birth of his second child. Despite missing the series opener against the Orioles, the Dodgers did not place him on the paternity list, choosing instead to temporarily play with one fewer player. The team anticipates Ohtani’s return by the weekend.

Having pitched on Wednesday, Ohtani is expected back in time for his next scheduled start. In his absence, rookie Ryan Ward stepped in as the team’s designated hitter on Friday, batting in the seventh position, while Kyle Tucker moved up to fill the usual leadoff spot held by Ohtani.

Heading into Friday, Ohtani boasts the second-highest OPS (.962) in the National League among qualified hitters. He also ranks second in ERA (1.47) for pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched, though he has allowed seven earned runs over his last two starts. Ohtani has been pitching despite a blister on his right middle finger and missed a game last week due to left knee inflammation, possibly from mechanical issues in his delivery.

Will Smith to Receive Neck Injection

Catcher Will Smith is set to receive a neck injection for his stiffness, according to manager Dave Roberts. Recent imaging showed no severe issues, described by Roberts as “fine.” Smith, who was diagnosed with an “inflamed disk” before undergoing imaging, remains on the injured list past the minimum duration and is doubtful for the trip to Minnesota on Monday at the start of a three-city stretch.

Edwin Díaz Advances in Recovery

Closer Edwin Díaz, recovering from elbow surgery, has begun throwing off the mound. He completed a bullpen session with 15 fastballs ranging between 91-93 mph, Roberts noted, describing it as a “really positive day” for him. Díaz underwent surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow in late April, with the team targeting a return after the All-Star break.

Brief Updates

  • Teoscar Hernández, recovering from a strained left hamstring, aims to start a minor-league rehab assignment next week.
  • Blake Snell, post-elbow surgery, progresses in his throwing program following a NanoNeedle scope procedure in mid-May. He is nearing the stage of throwing off a mound, according to Roberts.
