An incident at the 601 Sand Bar on the Congaree River, South Carolina, turned chaotic on June 6 when a large fight broke out. Videos captured the scene with dozens of people surrounding the brawlers as they exchanged punches and wrestled in the water.
Multiple videos from the event depict various fights occurring simultaneously, drawing large crowds of onlookers. One clip shows several individuals throwing punches while others try to intervene. Another video captures people grappling and exchanging blows waist-deep in water as bystanders record the altercation with their phones.
The confrontation resulted in six arrests and has prompted an ongoing investigation by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Thomas Summers indicated that at least 20 people were involved, and several individuals sustained injuries, including swollen eyes and head trauma.
“The injuries were severe,” Sheriff Thomas Summers stated.
Authorities have not disclosed the initial cause of the violence, though they noted alcohol played a significant role, with many instances of underage drinking observed.
Summers remarked on the potential for more injuries not yet reported and emphasized the danger of mixing water activities with alcohol. “This is not a suitable environment for families due to occurrences like this,” Summers noted.
The incident occurred during the annual Sparkleberry Duck Run, a popular event that attracts boaters and outdoor enthusiasts to the river area each year.
In connection with the brawl, Brendan Bonds, Hunter Dalzell, Lucas Scott, Edward Scott, Austin Mizzell, and Taylor Knudson have been arrested. They face charges related to assault and breach of peace.
The investigation continues, with authorities seeking additional information from the public. The Sheriff’s Office has requested that anyone with relevant details come forward.
