Oklahoma Political Scene Heats Up
In Oklahoma, political dynamics are shifting significantly. GOP Governor Kevin Stitt is facing term limits, leading to a race for his successor. Additionally, former U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin left his position to assume the role of Homeland Security Secretary, replacing Kristi Noem. Alan Armstrong, an energy executive, is temporarily filling Mullin’s U.S. Senate seat. However, Oklahoma law bars him from running for a full term as he holds the position temporarily.
Republican Kevin Hern, currently a four-term congressman and endorsed by former President Trump, is competing against four lesser-known candidates in the Republican Senate primary. The GOP primary for governor witnesses higher competition with nine candidates on the ballot, including several high-profile Republicans. A runoff election will occur on August 25 if no candidate achieves a clear majority of over 50% of the votes.
California Special Election
A special election in California will fill the term of former Rep. Eric Swalwell following his resignation. Swalwell resigned in April amidst allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denies. These accusations include two alleged assaults, one in 2019 and another in 2024, made by a woman who claimed she was intoxicated and unable to consent. Swalwell was previously a leading candidate for California governor but resigned from the race alongside his congressional position.
Georgia GOP Runoffs
In Georgia, Republican runoffs are determining nominees for Senate and governor positions after the May primary results left no candidate with a majority. For the Senate seat, incumbent Rep. Mike Collins, who positions himself as a ‘MAGA warrior,’ is up against Derek Dooley, a newcomer and former football coach. The primary winner will challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in November. Collins recently received President Trump’s endorsement. In the gubernatorial race, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones is competing against billionaire Rick Jackson. Trump has also endorsed Jones. The winner will face Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, Atlanta’s former mayor, in the upcoming November election.
Historic Voting Underway in Washington, DC
Washington, DC, is experiencing a historic primary election. Voters have the opportunity to choose both a new mayor and a new delegate to Congress, a first since 1990. During that time, gas prices were below $1.35 per gallon, and George H.W. Bush was the president.
