In 1943, nine Norwegian commandos embarked on a critical mission. Their goal was to cross heavily wooded, mountainous terrain on skis to reach the Vemork hydroelectric power plant in Rjukan, Norway. This plant was situated high above a waterfall and posed significant challenges for access and assault.
Vemork was the world’s only mass producer of ‘heavy water,’ essential for developing nuclear weapons. After Norway’s occupation in 1940, the Nazis realized the importance of Vemork for their atomic ambitions. Werner Heisenberg, a key figure in the Nazi nuclear program, promised a bomb capable of destroying entire cities.
The Nazis fortified Vemork, aware of the Allies’ interest in destroying it. The story of this race for nuclear weapons, and the events at Vemork, is detailed in Neal Bascomb’s bestseller, “The Winter Fortress.” While Michael Bay has optioned the rights to adapt this story, the film remains unproduced.
Such a film would provide insight into why President Donald Trump insists on preventing the Islamic Republic of Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Trump’s approach mirrors that of Churchill and Roosevelt, who focused on disrupting Hitler’s nuclear plans.
Iran’s ‘Twelver’ ideology, established by Ayatollah Khomeini during the 1979 revolution, presents a theocratic threat that defies conventional deterrence. Trump’s administration has targeted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, though challenges remain, such as the facility at Pickaxe Mountain.
The threats posed by Iran echo the dangers seen in Nazi Germany, where leadership showed no hesitation to use devastating weapons. Leaders in Iran, motivated by deep theological principles, are similarly resolute in their ambitions.
The Iranian regime, led by Ayatollahs for decades, has no moderate elements. Its pursuit of nuclear weapons stems from theological convictions aimed at destroying Israel and the United States. Understanding Iran’s motivations can be enhanced by revisiting the history at Vemork, a turning point in thwarting Nazi nuclear ambitions.
While Trump has taken significant actions against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, total eradication of the program remains difficult. Iran’s leadership remains unyielding in its ideology and methods. Today’s global strategies must draw from historical precedents set during World War II by figures like FDR and Churchill.
