Senator Lindsey Graham and UFC CEO Dana White have expressed criticism towards UFC heavyweight Josh Hokit after he made controversial remarks about Michelle Obama. These comments were made following his victory at the UFC Freedom 250 event held at the White House.
During the post-fight interview, Hokit repeated an unfounded conspiracy theory about the former first lady. After defeating Derrick Lewis, Hokit thanked President Donald Trump for hosting the event. He concluded his conversation with UFC commentator Joe Rogan by stating, ‘Michelle Obama is a man, am I right, America?’ This statement has been part of a long-running false narrative against Michelle Obama.
Senator Graham responded to Hokit’s words in a conversation with TMZ, labeling them ‘not good’ and referring to Hokit as an ‘idiot.’ Graham emphasized that the comments detracted from the purpose of the event: a celebration of America’s founding and the spirit of sportsmanship. He remarked, ‘It took away from the event. It was a fun event. It was to celebrate America’s founding, who we are as a nation… It was sort of a modern-day gladiators fighting hard and shaking each other’s hand and the spirit of sports. That was not the spirit of sports.’
Dana White also criticized Hokit’s comments in a statement to Time magazine, indicating his strong stance against spreading false information about public figures’ families. He noted, ‘I understand that the Obamas are public figures but I’m completely against saying nasty and false things about people’s families. Everyone knows my position on free speech but I hate that kind of nonsense.’
