Federal Judge Faces Impeachment Over Misconduct Allegations

A federal judge in Georgia, Eleanor Ross, issued an apology to a former law clerk for her inappropriate behavior. This apology follows allegations of engaging in sexual activity with a police officer in her office during working hours and within hearing of staff. Her actions have led to two House Republicans filing articles of impeachment against her.

In a letter addressed to the clerk, Judge Ross admitted her actions were “patently wrong” and took full accountability. She expressed regret for a previous letter that lacked a genuine apology. Judge Ross was appointed to her position by former President Barack Obama in 2014, and she faced disciplinary measures after an investigation confirmed sexual misconduct and dishonesty.

“You deserved better than to have your experience marred by my own offensive conflict,” stated Judge Ross in her apology letter.

The investigation found that Ross had sexual encounters in her chambers with a police officer, which was overheard by staff members. Following these findings, Representatives Andrew Clyde and Clay Fuller from Georgia filed impeachment resolutions against Ross. Federal judges hold lifetime appointments but can be removed through congressional impeachment.

Rep. Clyde emphasized the importance of judicial accountability, stating, “Judge Ross’ actions show she lacks the integrity required for her position.” He, along with co-sponsors, filed several articles of impeachment, alleging improper sexual activity, attendance at partisan events, and obstruction of official proceedings. Ross was accused of failing to disclose an affair with an officer of the Atlanta Police Department and attending a campaign event for the Fulton County District Attorney.

Judge Ross initially denied all allegations before admitting misconduct after corroborating evidence surfaced. The committee dismissal of her later confessions as too late highlights the severity of her initial false statements. Evidence showed frequent visits from the police officer to Ross’ chambers, correlating with accounts from multiple clerks who recalled inappropriate behavior.

Pressure mounts as the House Judiciary Committee considers opening impeachment proceedings. Both Clyde and Fuller argue that Judge Ross’ actions undermine trust in the judiciary, making removal from her position necessary.

Judge Ross in her apology letter acknowledged the gravity of her actions and committed to taking steps to prevent such misconduct in the future.
