Tornado Aftermath in Illinois and Indiana
Residents in parts of Illinois and Indiana faced immense damage after powerful tornadoes tore through their communities. On Friday, those affected were dealing with the destruction. Cleanup and recovery efforts began, but power restoration may take several days.
Storm Impact
The storms hit on Thursday and caused severe damage. Roofs were ripped from buildings, homes were flattened, and trees and power lines were downed, resulting in significant power outages and air traffic disruptions. Fortunately, no deaths or life-threatening injuries were reported, though several individuals received treatment for minor injuries.
Affected Areas
Tornado damage was reported in multiple towns. Notable locations include Merrillville and Hebron in Indiana, and Streator in Illinois. Authorities began assessing the damage to issue emergency declarations for recovery funding.
Community Response
Marsha Smith experienced the tornado firsthand in Merrillville. During the storm, she and her neighbors sought shelter under a stairwell, holding hands and praying. Smith described the situation as catastrophic. More than 200 buildings in Merrillville were damaged, including some destroyed, and blocked streets hindered movement. Cleanup crews worked tirelessly with assistance from regional agencies.
In response, the American Red Cross established shelters, providing beds for those displaced by the storm. Local social media updates highlighted efforts from crews clearing roads throughout the night.
Other Areas Affected
Additional damage was seen in Streator and Hebron, resembling that of Merrillville. The National Weather Service verified tornadoes in these areas and continued its assessment. Streator, a city about 100 miles southwest of Chicago, witnessed damage to nearly a dozen homes, with some destroyed. The city hall hosted a reunification center for displaced residents. Streator’s mayor expressed gratitude for the safety of residents and quick actions of emergency personnel.
Several individuals were treated for minor injuries, and first responders worked through the night to evaluate damage.
Recovery From the Storms
In Elkhart, Indiana, Jennifer Hall experienced the storm’s effects firsthand when a tree limb pierced her garage roof. She managed the situation using buckets to catch rainwater entering her home. Hall felt anxious due to a series of unfortunate events, coupled with her husband’s absence following her recent surgery.
The storm’s passage resulted in nearly 180,000 power outages in Illinois on Friday, a decrease from earlier totals. Indiana experienced close to 115,000 outages, though the numbers improved later Friday. Providers in both states, Commonwealth Edison and NIPSCO, worked to restore power. Commonwealth Edison aimed to resolve most outages from Wednesday’s storms by Saturday night, while Thursday’s outages would follow by Sunday night.
Travel Disruptions
The storms caused flight delays and cancellations, affecting airports in Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York on Thursday. The Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions also endured high heat and humidity. On Friday, Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports saw numerous flight disruptions.
Prior to the tornadoes, severe weather on Wednesday resulted in a tragedy in Des Moines, Iowa. A man at a homeless encampment died when struck by a falling tree during the storm. Authorities have not reported other deaths or significant injuries.
