Last weekend, Serena Williams shared that her comeback to professional tennis centers on her daughters, Olympia, aged eight, and Adira, aged two, witnessing her play. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, emphasized her lack of anything to prove. She stated, “I’ve won more than most people have in their whole lives, so it’s not that important to me, and it’s important that I keep reminding myself of that, because I don’t have anything to prove. I don’t have anything to lose, and everything here to just to gain.”
Williams, 44, made her return at the HSBC Championships at the Queen’s Club in London, marking her first match since the 2022 US Open. Her daughters and husband, Alexis Ohanian, supported her, fulfilling her primary goal. In the tournament, she partnered with Canadian prodigy Victoria Mboko, 19, for doubles, achieving a synchronized win over Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. However, Mboko sustained an injury during her singles match against Karolína Plíšková, which led her to retire and withdraw from the tournament, cutting Williams’ comeback short.
Williams gracefully accepted this setback, reflecting her desire to enjoy the sport and set a positive example for her children. On Instagram, she shared photos, including one of Olympia smiling while observing her serve. Williams wrote in her caption, “Some moments mean more than trophies ♥ @olympiaohanian. What a fun and memorable week at @hsbcchampionships. Thank you to everyone who made it so special. Wishing you a speedy recovery, @vickymboko. Can’t wait to see you back on court.” She also posted a supportive message for Mboko, saying, “You’re an incredible talent, and you’ll be back out there in no time. Wishing you a speedy recovery.” Mboko reposted it, adding symbols for a mending heart and a hug.
Williams’ fans have no reason to worry about her plans. She is set to participate in the Berlin Tennis Open next week. Reports indicate she will pair with Karolina Muchova for doubles. Williams expressed her excitement, stating, “Every tournament I add to my schedule right now feels special, and Berlin is no exception. I’m excited to compete in front of the German fans and continue building momentum throughout the grass-court season.”
