On Monday, the San Antonio Spurs achieved a significant victory in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, with a 115-111 win over the New York Knicks. This victory took place at the iconic Madison Square Garden, in front of an audience that included former President Donald Trump and many celebrities.
The Spurs, now trailing 2-1 in the series, managed to overturn their deficit by overcoming the intense atmosphere of the Garden. Although San Antonio initially led by 12 points, they found themselves trailing by seven at halftime. The performances of OG Anunoby and Josh Hart helped offset New York’s slow start, especially given Jalen Brunson’s early shooting struggles.
Victor Wembanyama’s strong performance was crucial for the Spurs. He scored 32 points, with eight rebounds and six assists. His efforts ensured San Antonio maintained a narrow lead in the final quarter, avoiding a sweep in this pivotal game. Wembanyama is now the second-youngest player, after Magic Johnson, to achieve at least 30 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a Finals game.
The Spurs aim for a historic comeback since no team has ever rebounded from losing the first two Finals games at home to win the championship. Meanwhile, New York’s 13-game postseason win streak, the second-longest in playoff history, concluded with this match.
Stephon Castle added 23 points to San Antonio’s score, and rookie Dylan Harper contributed 13 points. Despite New York’s efforts, led by Brunson’s 32 points on 25 shots, and Anunoby’s 28 points, the Knicks could not overcome the Spurs’ superior play. The Spurs committed fewer turnovers and had more assists, ensuring they maintained their lead until the end.
With 1:53 left in the game, Castle’s 3-pointer gave San Antonio a 111-104 lead, disappointing fans anticipating a Knicks victory. Though Brunson managed a late 3-pointer, reducing the deficit to three points, De’Aaron Fox’s jump shot over Anunoby nearly sealed the deal. Anunoby’s desperate 3-pointer with six seconds left was quickly followed by Castle’s calm free throws, ending New York’s threat.
Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday, presenting another chance for San Antonio to level the series. The Spurs demonstrated resilience and composure under high stakes, ensuring that the NBA Finals remain a thrilling contest.
