The Tony Awards on Sunday in New York showcased remarkable appearances by alumni from “Saturday Night Live” and its creator, Lorne Michaels. This well-known sketch comedy team’s impact was undeniable during Broadway’s celebrated evening.
Darrell Hammond, a notable figure from “Saturday Night Live” who now serves as the show’s announcer, led the opening announcements. Maya Rudolph, a cast member from 2000 to 2007, further amplified the show’s presence by presenting the first award of the night. She humorously shared insights with Cole Escola, creator of “Oh, Mary!” where she stars as Mary Todd Lincoln, acknowledging the “courage” needed to deliver impactful words in exchange for compensation.
The ceremony also saw former “S.N.L.” actors Rachel Dratch and Ana Gasteyer competing in the category of featured performance by an actress in a musical. Both actresses, known for their extensive history with the show, performed during the evening but lost the award to Shoshana Bean from “The Lost Boys.” Dratch, who portrayed the Narrator in “The Rocky Horror Show,” was previously nominated in 2022 for her role as the U.S. president’s secretary in “POTUS.”
The presence of these performers highlighted the enduring influence of “Saturday Night Live” beyond television, proving that its cast members continue to make significant contributions to live theater and entertainment.
