Heightened Security and Adjustments for NBA Finals As Trump Attends

Donald Trump is set to be the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game. His appearance at Madison Square Garden brings increased security measures, leading to significant adjustments for fans attending the event.

Security Measures and Fan Experience

In preparation for Trump’s attendance, the New York Police Department and U.S. Secret Service erected barriers to control both pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the arena. These measures were implemented more than four hours before tipoff of Game 3 between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. With security levels resembling those at an airport, fans were urged to arrive two hours early. Attendees had to present tickets or passes at checkpoints and pass through TSA-style magnetometers.

The changes caused long lines and wait times outside Madison Square Garden. Additionally, a watch party planned near the arena was canceled, and a no-bag policy was enforced for ticket holders.

The Knicks’ Playoff Journey

The Knicks’ fans have been enthusiastic throughout the playoff season. The team has achieved a 13-game winning streak to reach the finals for the first time since 1999. They are two victories away from their first NBA title since 1973. Due to high demand, ticket prices have soared, with the minimum entry price exceeding $5,000.

Responses from Players and Officials

Reacting to Trump’s anticipated presence, Knicks center Mitchell Robinson remained unfazed, stating, “Cool, I guess. We can still get out there and play (no matter) who’s here and who’s not.” Mayor Zohran Mamdani, alongside other dignitaries, is expected to attend the game. Mamdani purchased his standing-room-only ticket for about $1,000 directly from the venue.

Despite the disruption, Knicks guard Jose Alvarado expressed the resilient spirit of New Yorkers: “We improvise. We’re New Yorkers. We’re going to find a way to watch a game, and that’s what we’re doing.” As a result, fans adjusted by shifting watch parties to Bryant Park, located outside the security perimeter.
