The Alkaline Water Debate: Benefits and Concerns

Alkaline water is gaining attention as a possible alternative to regular drinking water. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Wahlberg, and Jennifer Aniston have endorsed it in brand campaigns. Yet, the scientific community remains uncertain about its benefits.

What is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is often bottled with added minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals raise the water’s pH level to over 7, making it alkaline. In contrast, a pH of 7 is considered neutral, while below 7 is acidic.

Claims and Research

Some suggest that alkaline water can neutralize body acidity. There are claims that it might prevent certain conditions like cancer and stroke. According to the Mayo Clinic, it might slow bone loss due to added calcium. Additionally, some studies hint that alkaline water combined with a Mediterranean diet could ease acid reflux and improve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

“Because the fluid in the stomach is so acidic, once regular or alkaline water gets down to your stomach, there will be little difference in the resulting stomach fluid pH,” said Howard E. LeWine, MD, from Harvard Health Publishing.

LeWine stated that any pH change from alkaline water is temporary. For true, lasting relief, antacids may offer more effective options. Harvard experts also caution those on PPIs, or acid blockers, about potential risks.

Possible Risks

Alkaline water with a pH higher than 9.8 may pose safety concerns like hyperkalemia, or high potassium levels in the blood. This is especially risky for individuals with kidney issues.

Expert Recommendations

Certified holistic nutritionist Robin DeCicco confirmed the lack of strong evidence for meaningful, long-term benefits from alkaline water. She emphasizes foundational dietary habits to reduce acidity, advocating for balanced meals that avoid sugar, caffeine, processed, and fried foods.

For those facing acid reflux issues, consulting a doctor is wise. Lifestyle changes such as regular meals and avoiding lying down post-meals can aid in managing symptoms.

While alkaline water may offer temporary relief, experts agree that maintaining a consistent, healthy diet is key to managing acidity long-term.
