Residents of St. Petersburg were advised to stay indoors following a large-scale drone attack by Ukraine on Russia’s second-largest city. This incident reveals Ukraine’s expanding capability to conduct operations deep within Russian territory. The attack occurred shortly after President Vladimir Putin declined an invitation from Ukraine for a meeting.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov reported that three people suffered minor injuries. He cautioned residents against going outside and anticipated potential disruptions in mobile internet services. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko stated that 141 drones were intercepted in the Leningrad region in what he described as an ‘unprecedented attack.’ According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, air defenses managed to down 376 Ukrainian drones.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed in a social media post that their drones traveled approximately 1,000 kilometers to target naval arsenals and a base in Kronstadt near St. Petersburg, in addition to hitting an oil depot in Krasnodar.
These drone strikes represent an embarrassment for Putin, who tries to portray the conflict as distant from the lives of ordinary Russians. Recently, another Ukrainian drone strike ignited an oil terminal and struck a nearby naval base just before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a significant event for Russian investment.
Putin announced plans to bolster air defenses in response to these Ukrainian attacks, which threaten to disrupt national events and public perception. Putin recently dismissed Zelenskyy’s proposal for dialogue, bluntly stating there’s ‘no point’ in meeting over the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned that the situation would deteriorate further for Russia. He insisted that no region in Russia would remain immune from Ukraine’s increasing long-range assaults.
Simultaneously, the battlefield remains static with long-range strikes providing each side with an opportunity for strategic advantages. Despite the front line’s relative immobility, strikes continue.
In Ukraine, overnight attacks by Russian forces in Dnipropetrovsk resulted in one death and three injuries according to Oleksandr Hanzha, the regional leader. Meanwhile, in Zaporizhzhia, a drone strike led to a fire at a parking lot, affecting seven individuals as reported by Ivan Fedorov, the regional head.
The Ukrainian air force detailed that 272 strike drones were launched by Russia overnight, but they successfully downed 249 of them.
