On Saturday, thousands gathered in New Delhi for a protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, a movement born from satire but now expressing serious demands for government accountability. Demonstrators, including members of Gen Z, called for the resignation of India’s education minister. Scandals surrounding student exams have surfaced during the minister’s tenure.
The Cockroach Janta Party originated as a satirical website created by Abhijeet Dipke, a Boston University graduate. The website, launched in May, served as a platform for unemployed youth to share grievances after India’s chief justice compared them to cockroaches.
Mr. Dipke addressed the rally under the hot sun, questioning the need to live in fear under the current government. He traveled directly from Boston to join the protest, becoming an unexpected figurehead for many frustrated Indians.
Images from the event show Mr. Dipke at the center of the crowd, supported by individuals like Shakeel Abdul, an architect from Bengaluru. Abdul emphasized the importance of backing the nation’s youth, stating that failing to do so would make him unworthy of citizenship.
