Trump’s Comments on Senator Tillis
President Donald Trump publicly criticized Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina on Friday. When asked about Tillis’ stance on nominating acting Attorney General Todd Blanche for the permanent role, Trump had harsh words for the Senator.
“Senator Tillis is a loser. That’s why he didn’t run. He didn’t run because I wouldn’t support him. And he’s just an angry man because he’s not going to be a senator anymore. He wasn’t respected in the Senate,” Trump said to reporters aboard Air Force One.
Tillis’ Conditions for Attorney General Nominee
Tillis serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, making his vote crucial for Blanche’s potential confirmation. He has stated that he will not support any nominee who downplays violence against law enforcement during the January 6 Capitol attack.
Tillis remarked on the importance of nominees having a strong stance against the events of January 6. He emphasized that any attorney general nominee should not condone the actions of those who attacked police officers.
Eliminating the issue of the anti-weaponization fund could improve Blanche’s chances of confirmation. Newsweek reached out to Tillis’ office for comment on these developments.
Concerns Over Blanche’s Nomination
Blanche’s nomination has caused concern among lawmakers due to his prior representation of Trump in several high-profile cases. The White House stands by Blanche as a loyal and effective leader, highlighting his role within the Justice Department.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson expressed confidence in Blanche’s abilities, asserting his role as an American patriot and effective DOJ leader.
Trump’s Defense of Blanche
Blanche has served as acting attorney general since April, following Pam Bondi’s dismissal. Trump reiterated his support, touting Blanche’s capabilities and popularity.
“Todd Blanche is a brilliant guy who everybody likes, and everybody respects,” Trump said, calling Blanche “fantastic.”
Challenges in the Confirmation Process
Blanche’s confirmation could test Trump’s influence over Senate Republicans. The slim Republican majority means that any defections could complicate the nomination.
The confirmation hearings will likely involve discussion on not just Blanche’s qualifications but also the White House’s influence over the DOJ under Trump.
The controversial “anti-weaponization” fund aimed to support individuals claiming unfair government targeting. The fund faced legal challenges and was ultimately blocked by court order.
Senate Leaders’ Views
Senate Majority Leader John Thune commented on Blanche’s confirmation process.
“Most of our members are pretty deferential to who the president wants in some of those key positions,” Thune stated.
Texas Senator John Cornyn raised questions about the attorney general’s role and Blanche’s commitments, expressing concern about balancing duties as a cabinet member and chief law enforcement officer.
