The Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine, Graham Platner, organized a major campaign rally on Friday evening. This comes as news continues to spread about his interactions with several women. Recently, the campaign dealt with issues resulting from sexually explicit messages Platner sent while married. On Thursday, The New York Times reported on his past relationships, with some describing him as difficult or disrespectful.
One woman made an allegation, stating Platner twisted her arm during an argument and confined her in a room. Platner denied this accusation. Speaking to approximately 600 supporters, who gave him a standing ovation, he said, “When politically motivated, serious and false accusations are made against me, Maine, you have my back.” Despite these controversies, Maine’s primary election is approaching on Tuesday, with Democrats eager to find a strong candidate to oppose Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November. Many continue to support Platner, who speaks of past mistakes and personal growth.
Some dismiss the message exchange as a personal issue to be handled within the marriage, while others underline the importance of the Democratic pursuit to regain Senate control. However, there’s a lingering concern about further controversial revelations regarding Platner.
I think a lot of people are afraid, said Deb Dagnan, chair of Maine’s Piscataquis County Democrats. They’re waiting for the other shoe to drop after he gets the nomination. Then what do we do?
Platner’s Role in the Senate Election
Platner is a significant figure in the Democrats’ strategy to regain the Senate. Yet, his campaign has faced ongoing issues, including his concealed Nazi tattoo, past inflammatory online comments, and the recent texting revelations.
Still, Platner maintains support from prominent figures such as Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ruben Gallego. He appeared in Bar Harbor for a rally with Rep. Ro Khanna and other Democratic candidates with the primary election approaching. Platner is favored to secure the Democratic nomination after his primary opponent, Gov. Janet Mills, withdrew her candidacy in late April. Platner continues to face scrutiny over his marriage and communications.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, was aware of the texts last year and the campaign deemed them a private matter. Former staffer Genevieve McDonald accused Platner of maintaining inappropriate communications, viewing this as a campaign vulnerability.
In response to the revelations, Platner published a video with Gertner, who described the reports as “gossip” and noted that marriages face challenges.
Concerns of Voters
Gertner’s comments about their marriage resonated with some, prompting empathy for their private struggles. Joanne Mason, a Democratic leader, expressed that such matters should stay private.
It’s none of my business as far as I’m concerned,Mason stated. And I would hope that people wouldn’t judge any one person on their own private marriage.
However, some voters worry that new scandals may surface, which could harm Platner’s campaign. Valerie Tate from Belfast acknowledged the potential of disqualifying revelations but highlighted Gertner’s sincerity in addressing personal development.
Of course, there is that concern as there would be in any race with somebody we don’t know all the dramas and the journeys they’ve been on,Tate expressed.
Ongoing Issues from Platner’s Past
This isn’t the first controversial issue Platner has faced. Questions about his past emerged with a Nazi tattoo he later covered, claiming ignorance of its meaning. However, a former girlfriend noted Platner’s jokes about the symbol as being reflective of Nazi iconography. Additionally, Reddit posts surfaced where Platner dismissed military sexual assaults and used offensive language, for which he has apologized.
While some feminist political groups have encouraged votes for Gov. Mills, who remains on the primary ballot, Platner draws a crowd with his progressive campaign. He focuses on issues like income inequality, healthcare access, and housing costs, gathering substantial support and campaign funds.
People want somebody new, said Paige Zeigler, a former Democratic lawmaker in Maine. They want somebody that they feel that they can embrace. And Platner is riding that wave.
