French Prosecutors Investigate Alleged Abuse of Activists by Israeli Authorities

French activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, who were intercepted by Israeli forces before reaching the Gaza Strip, reported abuse during their detention by Israeli authorities. The Israeli side, however, denied these claims.

The activists, detained last month, were part of a group challenging Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. Several flotillas have been organized in efforts to bring aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis there, especially after Israel imposed stricter restrictions during its military campaign in Gaza that followed the Hamas-led attack in 2023.

On Friday, French prosecutors announced the opening of a preliminary investigation into the activists’ claims of mistreatment. This investigation will focus on allegations of torture and war crimes made by the activists, adding international attention to an already tense diplomatic situation for Israel. Notably, this investigation is handled by France’s antiterrorism office.

The incident gained further attention after Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Israeli national security minister, shared a video in which he appeared taunting the detained activists. This video, reportedly showing activists handcuffed and pinned down on the deck of a ship, sparked international and domestic criticism of Israel’s handling of the situation.

The investigation and the broader international scrutiny come at a time when Israel faces diplomatic challenges, notably from its long-standing European allies.
