National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation following her husband Abraham’s diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer. The decision has sparked discussions among media and Democratic figures, as reported by Fox News, about the political motivations behind her exit.
In a post shared on X, Gabbard revealed that Abraham has undergone a nearly seven-hour surgery to remove a rare sacral chordoma, a type of cancerous bone tumor. She wrote, “The surgery to remove bone and surrounding tissue lasted almost seven hours and was successful. He had a rough night and is in a lot of pain but is finally home resting. Now recovery begins.”
Her departure was first exclusively reported by Fox News Digital, and Gabbard emphasized her need to support her husband through this challenging time, as his condition involves significant medical challenges.
“During this period, he will remain Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
Appointed in February 2025, Gabbard previously served in Congress and is a U.S. Army Reserve officer and combat veteran. She transitioned from being a Democrat to an Independent, and later to the Republican Party, during her political career.
Fox News Digital obtained Gabbard’s resignation letter in which she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
“Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026,” she wrote. “My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”
She expressed her appreciation for her husband’s support through her military deployment and political career, stating she could not leave him to face the fight alone.
Former President Donald Trump acknowledged Gabbard’s decision and stated his confidence in her husband’s recovery. Trump announced Bill Pulte as the acting Director of National Intelligence. Pulte will continue in his role at the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
Chordoma, as defined by the National Cancer Institute, is a rare type of bone cancer that can form at the base of the skull, in the spine, or in the sacrum, the region at the end of the spine.
