A new television ad featuring Mayor Zohran Mamdani premiered on Wednesday night during the postgame coverage of the New York Knicks’ Game 1 victory in the NBA finals. However, the focus of the 30-second spot was neither on the team nor the mayor himself.
This advertisement aimed to boost the candidacies of three left-leaning Democrats in competitive House primaries across New York City, utilizing Mr. Mamdani’s popularity and New York’s enthusiasm for the Knicks. The candidates, Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander, have all received endorsements from the mayor. While Mr. Lander and Ms. Avila Chevalier are challenging sitting incumbents, Ms. Valdez is contending for an open seat.
In the ad, Mr. Mamdani appears on a basketball court accentuated with the Knicks’ signature orange color, proclaiming, “This is the team. This is our year.”
The advertisement, produced by Morris Katz, the mayor’s top political adviser, and aired regionally, cost about $110,000. This expense was divided among the three congressional campaigns.
In a written statement, Mr. Mamdani said, “It’s a new era in Knicks’ basketball, and it’s time for the same in our politics too.” He likened the slate of candidates to the Knicks by saying they embody “a fight, a selflessness, and a love of New York that will serve our city well.”
