Maine Senate Race Heats Up with New Developments

Governor Janet Mills of Maine is back in the spotlight after stepping away from the state’s Senate race last month. Her recent statements suggest she remains a potential option for Democratic voters. This comes as Graham Platner, the anticipated Democratic nominee, faces controversy.

Allegations have surfaced that Platner sent sexually explicit texts to women outside his marriage. This news broke on June 1, 2026, and has since attracted significant attention.

Governor Mills’s Statement

In an interview with The Portland Press Herald, Gov. Janet Mills clarified her position. “People have the impression that I ‘withdrew’ or ‘dropped out,’” Mills said. “I simply suspended active campaigning. I am still on the ballot.” She shared this perspective with Steve Collins, a columnist for Maine’s largest newspaper.

Reaction to Platner’s Controversy

This revelation is not the first controversy for Platner, who galvanized progressives as an oyster farmer and first-time political candidate. His campaign previously dealt with backlash over a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, which he has since covered up, and inflammatory Reddit posts from the past.

The allegations about the explicit texts have injected tension into the Democratic primary set for next week. Despite Mills halting her campaign, her name and David Costello’s remain options for Democratic voters in Maine. Costello is a former official in state governments in both Maine and Maryland.

Impact on the Democratic Strategy

The Platner situation distracts from the Democratic goal of defeating Senator Susan Collins. Collins, a five-term Republican, has maintained her seat even as Maine swung Democratic in presidential elections.

Maine is critical to the Democrats’ strategy to flip the Senate. The state was the only one won by former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 with a competitive Republican-held Senate seat.

Platner’s Defense

Platner called the reports “journalistic malpractice” and criticized the media for not focusing on issues he deems important. He commented, “Our opponents want politics to be empty of content and empty of actual change — and beating that is exactly what our movement is about.”

Senator Bernie Sanders, an early supporter, stressed the importance of focusing on issues impacting working families. He acknowledged Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, who supports her husband amid the controversy, and expressed best wishes for their marriage.

The events in Maine continue to unfold, with implications for the broader political landscape as the election approaches.
