Lincoln-Way West Victory Led by Jackson Mansker’s Determination

Jackson Mansker of Lincoln-Way West experienced a mix of frustration and triumph during the Class 4A Homewood-Flossmoor Regional championship game. A remarkable catch by junior center fielder Marcos Morales denied Mansker a home run, leading to a moment of anger that saw the typically calm player damaging his knuckles on the bench.

Mansker’s anger turned productive in his next at-bat. The senior third baseman hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie and leading his team to a 6-2 victory over the host Vikings. This win marked Lincoln-Way West’s sixth regional title overall and the fourth in the last five years.

Carson Paulas contributed to the win with two hits and two RBIs. Owen Chudzinski earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings in relief. Additionally, senior catcher Owen Weber made a critical defensive play with a bases-loaded pickoff in the fourth inning, keeping the score tied at 2-2.

An unexpected opportunity arose when a pitch bounced in front of Weber. “I needed to keep the ball in front of me,” said Weber. “Seeing the runner off the base, I took advantage.”

Jalen Webb led the Vikings with two hits, but the team fell short against Lincoln-Way West’s resilience. Mansker’s performance was notable, including a double and an intentional walk in his other at-bats.

This game also saw Mansker revamping his batting technique. He adopted a new stance, lifting his left heel upon advice from assistant coach Jeff Struebing. This adjustment resulted in a more athletic swing, as noticed by Struebing, who praised Mansker’s physical prowess. “He’s as athletic as anyone in the state, but his swing needed a tweak,” Struebing explained. “A little heel lift gave him more power.”

Mansker’s teammate, Paulas, spoke highly of him, both on and off the field. “If I get on base, he’ll find a way to bring me home. He’s a reliable player and a friend,” Paulas commented. Their teamwork on the field represents Lincoln-Way West’s strong lineup, and their friendship underscores the team’s unity.

Another key date is ahead, as Lincoln-Way West will face third-seeded Sandburg in the sectional semifinal. The time and location remain to be determined. Mansker’s adjustments and Lincoln-Way West’s solid teamwork continue to drive their success this season.
