Nicolas Cage, the renowned actor, shared insights into his past career choices revealing that he declined roles in two notable franchises in favor of films that he felt aligned more closely with his aspirations. In an interview with Complex News, the 62-year-old actor recounted his decisions involving roles in ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and ‘Spider-Man.’
Cage explained that Jim Carrey had offered him a role in ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ which he turned down to star in ‘Leaving Las Vegas.’ Additionally, he passed on the opportunity to play the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man,’ choosing instead to take on a dual role in ‘Adaptation.’
“One was when Jim Carrey wanted me to do ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and I said I’d rather do ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ and the other was ‘Spider-Man’ as the Green Goblin and I said I’d rather do ‘Adaptation,'” he said. “Both those choices gave me more to do as an actor.”
Jeff Daniels went on to play Harry Dunne in ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and its sequel. Meanwhile, Willem Dafoe took on the Green Goblin character in ‘Spider-Man,’ appearing in subsequent sequels and in the 2021 film ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’
Reflecting on his selections, Cage remarked, “I think I made the right choice.” He emphasized the challenges involved in portraying twins and the allure of ‘Adaptation’s’ script. “To play twins in a movie was a big challenge and daunting,” he said. His performance in ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ where he played an alcoholic screenwriter, earned him both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. In ‘Adaptation,’ Cage received additional accolades playing twin brothers, which garnered him another Academy Award nomination.
Discussing more recent work, Cage spoke about preparing for his role in the 2024 film ‘The Surfer.’ During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he recounted the physical demands of learning to surf, stating, “I just got pounded and literally got stuck in the rip tide… I could have died.”
His focus on family life has also influenced his career choices. Cage has emphasized his commitment to his children, which includes three sons, Weston, Kal-El, and August Francesca. He has previously stated his decision to turn down roles in blockbuster franchises such as ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Matrix’ was driven by his desire to remain close to his kids.
“First and foremost … there’s no version of Nick Cage in reality that doesn’t want to spend time with his children,” Cage told People. “There’s no version of Nick Cage that didn’t put family first over career.”
His choice to stay with family rather than commit to long-term international projects underscores his prioritization of family over career opportunities.
