French Open Day 7 Highlights and Analysis

Welcome to the French Open briefing, where we dig into the significant events of the tournament’s seventh day.

Women’s Draw Shakes Up

The women’s draw saw unexpected developments on Day 7. Madison Keys humorously noted a sense of unpredictability in the men’s draw, yet it was the women’s side that saw major changes. Defending champion Coco Gauff was defeated by Anastasia Potapova. No. 6 seed Amanda Anisimova also exited, losing to France’s Diane Parry. Keys herself took down Victoria Mboko, leaving Iga Świątek as the sole past French Open champion still in competition.

The remaining seeds include Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka, who are set to face off in the fourth round. Sabalenka beat Daria Kasatkina, while Osaka triumphed against Iva Jović. In the bottom half, Świątek is scheduled to play Marta Kostyuk, and Elina Svitolina will meet Belinda Bencic. These matches promise high-quality tennis, though the tension over finalists isn’t as high in the women’s draw.

Endurance Tests on the Men’s Side

The men’s competition saw intense battles, notably João Fonseca’s five-set win over Novak Djokovic. Another standout, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, engaged in a near six-hour match against Martin Landaluce. It became the third-longest match at Roland Garros since 1996.

On Saturday, five out of the 16 third-round matches stretched to five sets. This includes Matteo Berrettini’s five-hour duel with Francisco Comesaña and Matteo Arnaldi’s nearly five-hour victory over Raphaël Collingnon.

Cerúndolo, although victorious this time, expressed exhaustion on social media, highlighting the physical toll of such demanding matches.

Moïse Kouame’s Resilient Performance

At 17, Moïse Kouame impressed despite his loss to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo. Kouame was playing his first Grand Slam main draw and managed to take the first set from Tabilo.

Exhibiting resilience, he rallied the crowd and made a significant effort to reach the fourth set tie-break. Although Tabilo eventually won, Kouame’s ascent over 100 ranking places is notable. Despite defeat, his journey at Roland Garros has been filled with encouraging moments.
