Yellowstone Actor Cole Hauser’s Deep Ties to Montana and Impact on Tourism

Cole Hauser’s connection to Montana runs deeper than his role in the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise. He shared with Fox News Digital that while the show brought Montana into the spotlight, his family’s association with the Treasure State dates back nearly 140 years.

Hauser explained, “Montana, my family has been there since 1886. The Hauser legacy there is huge.” His ancestor, Samuel T. Hauser, was instrumental in Montana’s formative years, serving as the seventh governor of the Montana Territory. He was a businessman whose ventures in banking, mining, and railroads significantly influenced the region’s early development. Filming in Montana felt like a homecoming for Hauser due to these historical ties.

With the expansion of the Western franchise into Texas through ‘Dutton Ranch,’ experts anticipate a similar tourism boom, akin to what occurred in Montana. Adam Duckworth, president of Travelmation, noted a significant increase in travel to film locations, referring to this trend as “set-jetting,” where fans visit the sets of their favorite shows.

Duckworth highlighted ‘Yellowstone’ as a pioneer in this trend, noting the show’s impact on American travel. Viewers of the series, captivated by the breathtaking landscapes surrounding the Dutton family, contributed to increased tourism at Yellowstone National Park and nearby areas.

Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ series, since its premiere in 2018, has evolved into a major television franchise. The show’s portrayal of Montana’s vast landscapes—mountains, ranches, and skies—became integral to its appeal. Hauser believes the locations were crucial to the show’s popularity.

Hauser shared his observations of the show’s global reach, recounting encounters with fans overseas who embrace the cowboy culture portrayed in ‘Yellowstone’ and express their affection for the show.

He stated, “The storytelling and Montana as its own character distinguish ‘Yellowstone.’ People appreciate the beauty of the Old West.”

Duckworth noted that fans seek more than scenic views—they want to experience the lifestyle depicted in the series. He described how travel related to television shows can motivate people to visit filming locations and live out experiences similar to those seen on screen.

With the franchise’s shift to Texas, Hauser highlighted new challenges, contrasting Montana’s environment with Texas’s distinct landscape and climate.

Hauser and co-star Kelly Reilly aimed to preserve the qualities that fans cherish about their characters, Rip and Beth, in this new setting. Reilly portrays Beth Dutton alongside Hauser as Rip Wheeler.

The expansion to Texas also brings attention to filming locations such as Ferris, Texas, and Saunders Ranch in Weatherford, Texas, which are gaining popularity among fans.

Travelmation advisor Kris Porter observed a shift in vacation requests post-‘Yellowstone’ craze, with families now drawn to ranch experiences they initially hadn’t considered.

Porter noted that today’s travelers seek luxury experiences mirroring those from the show, indicating a preference for high-end amenities along with adventure.

She remarked on Texas’s appeal beyond the series, especially regarding its favorable weather for travel year-round.

According to Porter, Texas offers lavish spas and all-inclusive stays, making it a preferred destination for high-end trips compared to cooler locations like Wyoming.
