Country music star Wynonna Judd has shared insights into her current relationship struggles within her family and her upcoming album. Currently, Wynonna and her sister Ashley Judd are not speaking, focusing instead on their own paths, a situation she believes many families can understand. Wynonna explained to People that they are taking a break, saying, “She’s doing her thing, and I’m doing mine.”
During discussions about her forthcoming album “The Hard Truth,” Wynonna revealed more about her complex relationship with her late mother, Naomi Judd. The album delves into family secrets and her own personal battle with emotions like anger and forgiveness. As she prepared to release the album on October 2, Wynonna shared her feelings about the open and vulnerable nature of the work. “I feel like this is the most honest and vulnerable I’ve ever been,” Wynonna explained.
The album was co-written with her husband, Cactus Moser, who encouraged her to embrace vulnerability in her songwriting. Wynonna was part of the successful mother-daughter duo, The Judds, who left a significant mark on country music during the 1980s with hits like 14 No. 1 singles and numerous awards. However, Wynonna also experienced a tumultuous family dynamic marked by both deep love and drama. Notably, her mother’s struggles with severe depression and the secrets she chose to keep influenced the family’s relationships.
Naomi Judd’s battles with mental illness played a significant role in their lives. Wynonna described her mother’s mental health condition as a disease, recounting how keeping secrets throughout those years devastated her. Naomi Judd passed away by suicide in April 2022 at the age of 76, but Wynonna insisted that telling her story and releasing “The Hard Truth” was something necessary for her personal journey, irrespective of her mother’s passing.
In reflecting on the potential impact of the album’s revelations, Wynonna acknowledged that the honest portrayal of her feelings likely would have been tough for her mother to hear, but asserted the necessity of sharing her truth. Her resolve shows a commitment to authenticity, knowing that both painful and healing experiences formed her narrative.
