U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi was at a Hindu temple in Aurora when a 19-year-old from Palatine, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, allegedly tried to conduct a mass shooting. The incident occurred on a Sunday, with a potential tragedy averted when Paporakis’ weapon malfunctioned.
Krishnamoorthi expressed his horror at the event, emphasizing the threat posed by white supremacist violence targeting Indian Americans. As per the information shared by Cook County prosecutors, Paporakis intended to open fire but was unsuccessful and later discussed his actions with co-workers. These co-workers alerted authorities, which led to his apprehension.
Police in Palatine reported arresting Paporakis on that Sunday evening. Officers discovered a manifesto attributed to him, titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto),” which outlined positions rooted in extremism and white supremacy. The searches also yielded weapons, a significant amount of ammunition, tactical gear, body armor, and items featuring extremist symbols.
U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi highlighted the urgent need to take such threats seriously to prevent potential violence stemming from racial hatred. Paporakis now faces charges of making terrorist threats and illegal weapon possession, with a court appearance scheduled for October 30.
The Consulate General of India appreciated the swift action by law enforcement, confirming ongoing communication with the Indian community while monitoring the situation closely.
