A West Virginia state delegate, David Elliott Pritt, faces strong demands to resign after being arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with a 15-year-old student from a school where he worked as an English teacher. The 36-year-old delegate, who is married with four children, faces charges of enticement of a minor, as reported in a federal criminal complaint.
According to the complaint, Pritt began communicating with the student while she was in eighth grade in 2024, using platforms like Roblox and Snapchat. The relationship reportedly escalated with Pritt sending explicit videos and photos and requesting the victim to reciprocate.
In his role at Oak Hill High School, Pritt is alleged to have initiated direct sexual contact with the girl by late 2025. These incidents are said to have taken place in his classroom. The complaint includes warnings from Pritt to the girl against disclosing their relationship, emphasizing the potential scandal and consequences for both.
The arrest has led to widespread condemnation and calls for Pritt’s resignation. West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Roger Hanshaw has removed Pritt from all legislative roles and urged him to step down, citing the need for higher standards for public officials. Hanshaw stated that while Pritt deserves a fair trial, the integrity of public trust demands his resignation in light of the allegations.
Delegate Josh Holstein echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of public officials maintaining ethical standards and stating that the allegations hinder Pritt’s ability to serve effectively. Fayette County Schools, where Pritt was employed, has confirmed the arrest and is cooperating with the investigation, emphasizing student safety as a top priority.
West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Michele Blatt has suspended Pritt’s teaching certificate, citing the gravity of the allegations given his position of trust. Pritt remains in custody, and legal proceedings are set to continue. The situation has led to discussions on the potential need for a special legislative session to address Pritt’s status, regardless of the ongoing criminal case outcome.
